In 1996, Philippine punk band the Ex-Presidents Combo released its debut album, Ex-Presidents Combo Greatest Hits?.
The band's music is raucous, gritty and mostly charming as well. The members of the Ex-Presidents Combo have much enthusiasm and it is contagious. Nine of the albums' eleven songs are written by various members of the band, and the songwriting is mostly skilled, particularly on side one of the cassette, featuring all-important catchy melodies and hooks.
Songs such as "Tell Me Why," "Slowly Dying," "James Last," all on side one, immediately snare a listener's attention. Though songs such as "'Twas A Mine" and "Erase Your Head (Free Your Mind)" on side two of the cassette aren't as strong as the others, the sound is far from bad, and redeemed by the melodic power of "(They Took The) Sun Away."
The sound of the Ex-Presidents Combo is reminiscent of 70's seminal punk group the Sex Pistols as well as 90's punk bands Green Day and Rancid. The sound of the Ex-Presidents Combo's "James Last" here has a Clash feel to it.
The singing of lead vocalist Pepper Andres is impressive, and he effects a British accent a la the Sex Pistols' Johnny Rotten on several songs. The rhythm guitar of Robie Toscano is stirring, and Dax Gomez's incisive and searing lead guitar fills and solos add a valuable touch.
The band's cover of "Boys," recorded by the Beatles early in their career, is outstanding and the arrangement here imaginative and clever. Ex-Presidents Combo Greatest Hits? could impress an international audience, especially side one of the cassette.
